Butterflies and Bicycles
Another experience in "letting go" literally happened when Isaiah decided he didn't want training wheels on any longer. Boy was it tough taking the hand off the back of the bike. He kept telling us "you're slowing me down." This was a powerful message to me. Kariann Olsen shared this neat story (and I am typing what I took from it) about a researcher who worked with caterpillars and studied butterflies. He noticed that one of the caterpillars was having a most difficult time getting out of its cocoon, so he thoughtfully and with good intentions helped the caterpillar out. Unfortunately the caterpillar never recovered from the "help." He later learned that the wings are strengthened and prepared for flying because of the laborious exit from its safe home in the cocoon. I guess I should allow for some more struggling, maybe a crash or two and allow his muscles to strengthen and his confidence to grow. Is there spirtual application? Absolutely.

It sure was a bitter-sweet day, but it's been fun to see him grow already.
